Join us for a Spit Spreads Death walking tour of the historic Mount Moriah cemetery!

 

Join us as we walk the grounds of the 1855 cemetery and visit the graves of Philadelphians who lost who were lost to the 1918 flu, discussing details of their lives-and burials during the last American pandemic.  

 

A general overview of 1918 pandemic Philadelphia will be provided by Mütter Museum staff, and information about Historical Mount Moriah from the Friends of Mount Moriah Volunteers.

About Mount Moriah Cemetery:

 

Mount Moriah Cemetery is an historic burial ground incorporated by an Act of the State Legislature in 1855, one of several rural cemeteries developed in Philadelphia between 1845 and 1860. The cemetery is approximately 200 acres and spans Cobbs Creek in Philadelphia and Yeadon. Mount Moriah was abandoned in 2011, and has been cared for by the all-volunteer Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery since. It is estimated that 200,000 people are buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery with 648 burials as a result of the 1918 flu pandemic.

 

Please note:

 

  • Mount Moriah Cemetery is enter at your own risk: we recommend that visitors wear sturdy shoes, weather appropriate protective clothing, beware of uneven ground, and do not touch or lean on any headstones.  The tour will last approximatley 1 hour, with additional time for questions.
  • The College of Physicians of Philadelphia is committed to operating events as safely as possible. Therefore, proof of vaccination is required for all College events and will be checked at the door.
  • When indoors, staff and visitors over the age of two years old are also required to wear a mask or face covering over their nose and mouth unless actively eating or drinking.
